The Art of Genuine Conversation: Women Communicators of Austin Morning Mingle
The Art of Genuine Conversation
On Friday, February 27, 2026, I had the honor of speaking to Women Communicators of Austināan awesome community that's been in Austin since 1929! We talked about ditching small talk and having real conversations that actually matter.
First Impressions
Within 7 seconds, people decide whether or not they like someone. That's itā7 seconds.
Body Language
Eye contact, a firm handshake, heads up, shoulders back. How you carry yourself matters.
A Friendly Face
Your facial expressions set the tone. Be approachable and open.
People Remember How You Made Them Feel
Real talksāreal conversationsālead to opportunities, friendships, jobs, and collaborations. It's not about what you said, it's about how you made someone feel.
The connections that stick are the ones where both people walked away feeling seen, heard, and valued.
Conversation as a Skill
Good news: conversation is a skill, and skills can be learned.
Ask Surprising Questions
Open-ended questions that lead to genuine, unexpected responses.
Show Real Interest
Be curious about the person in front of youānot just polite.
Repeat & Expand
Repeat back what you learned and build on it. It shows you're truly listening.
Embrace Others
Choose curiosity over judgment. You'll learn things you never expected, make better decisions from diverse perspectives, and show emotional intelligence that draws people in.
Be courteous enough to listen. When we approach others with genuine curiosity instead of assumptions, we open the door to richer, more meaningful exchanges.
Quiet Confidence
You don't have to be loud or extroverted to be confident.
Speak Clearly, Not Fast
Pace yourself. Clarity beats speed every time.
Comfortable Pauses
Collect yourself. Pauses show thoughtfulness, not weakness.
Admit "I Don't Know"
Without shame. Honesty builds trust faster than pretending.
Take Up Space
Avoid talking over people and faking experience. Be present.
Confidence Hacks
"Confidence isn't the absence of fearāit's doing it anyway."
Post notes on your mirror:
- "I can do hard things"
- "I can move with confidence"
- "I can smile through tough times"
In the moment:
- Smile and stand up straight
- Breatheāslow exhale to calm yourself
- Prepare: know your goal, what you'll talk about, what questions you may have
Don't Shy Away
Meet others in earnest. Show up as yourself.
Focus Outward
Get out of your own head. Others are also nervous.
Start Small
Find a friend, or someone who looks solo. Ask open questions.
Morning Mingle Conversations
After the talk, we encouraged everyone to practice right away. Here are the ice-breaker questions we usedāsteal these for your next networking event:
Ice-Breaker Questions
1. How has your favorite high school subject influenced your career path?
2. If you could spend a year learning anything, what would it be?
3. What's something you learned the hard way?
The first two questions were shared by Adrienne Giffin from the Now You're Talking Game.
Thank you to Women Communicators of Austin for having me. This community has been bringing communicators together in Austin since 1929, and it was a privilege to be part of it.
